MCC Restrictions for UPI Payments (Premium Feature)
To enhance security and transaction control, Merchant Category Code (MCC) restrictions are now supported for UPI payments made via Volopay virtual cards.
This feature ensures that UPI transactions to specific merchant categories can be restricted, helping businesses enforce spending policies and reduce unauthorized transactions.
Features:
Merchant Restriction Alerts:
UPI payments to restricted merchant categories will be automatically declined.In-App Notification:
Users will see a clear message within the platform indicating that the transaction was blocked due to MCC restrictions.Email Notification:
A notification email will also be sent to the user explaining that the expense could not be processed due to a merchant restriction.
Example:
If a user attempts a transaction with a merchant like Grofers, and that merchant's MCC is restricted, the transaction will be declined, and the user will receive both an in-app alert and an email notification explaining the reason.
How It Works
When a UPI payment is initiated, the merchant’s MCC is checked.
If the MCC is restricted, the transaction is declined immediately.
The user is informed via the app and email with a message referencing the merchant restriction.
This provides clear visibility and helps prevent unauthorized or non-compliant expenses.
Impact
Prevents UPI payments to restricted or non-business-related merchants.
Improves compliance with company spending policies.
Applies to all UPI-enabled virtual cards configured with this feature.
Note:
MCC restrictions for UPI payments are a premium feature and not part of Volopay’s standard offering. They can be configured from the backend upon request for clients who require this level of transaction control.
Real-Time UPI Transaction Flow for Virtual Cards
To comply with UPI guidelines, Volopay has implemented Real-Time Transaction Flow (RHA) for all UPI payments made via virtual cards. Transactions are now validated in real time against key UPI rules to ensure security and compliance.
Key Checks:
Card Activation Window: UPI transactions over ₹5,000 will be declined if the card was activated less than 24 hours ago.
Daily Limit: A maximum of 10 UPI transactions is allowed per card per day. Additional attempts will be blocked.
Self VPA Block: Payments to the cardholder’s own UPI ID (e.g., name-volopay@pinelabs) are not allowed.
These controls help prevent misuse, support regulatory compliance, and enhance payment security.
